Recently, I've been remembering all kinds of things from my childhood that were awesome and have been getting nostalgic over them. Things from the 90s just seem so much cooler than the things that kids have now. (Which is probably why I maintain the most extensive knowledge of 90s pop culture ever. I remember more about the 90s than I do about classes I took last semester. Let's hope it comes in handy on a game show or something later in life.) I want to see if you guys liked the same things:
Ghostwriter, the TV show. I think it aired on PBS when I was around 8-9 years old. It had a ghost that totally wasn't scary, a cast of cools NYC kids with crazy clothes, and a little bit of mystery. What more could a kid ask for? I totally wished that ghostwriter was real and that he'd talk to me, haha.
Skip It. Basically, a ball on a string that went around your ankle. I remember INSISTING on getting the version with the counter so I could keep track of all of my skips because I was SURE I could hold all the world Skip It records.
Yak Bak -- another amazing toy. This picture is the exact version I had -- The buttons glowed in the dark and it had all kinds of sound effects built in. Perfect for playing pranks on your mom.
Clarissa Explains It All -- When I was little, I watched Clarissa and thought she was SO GROWN UP. She had the most amazing room and a pet lizard that lived in a baby pool and a best friend (who was a BOY!) who crawled through her window instead of using the front door. I always thought my life would be like that when I got to be a teen, haha.
The Clear Telephone -- I didn't have one of these, but CLARISSA DID. It was one of the biggest reasons I thought she was cool. Clear phone with your own phone line? Again, SO GROWN UP!
Giga Pets -- Or Tamogotchis, or Nano Babies, or whatever your digital creature of choice was. Mine was Giga Pet, and again, I had this exact model. It was a puppy, and basically, it recreated all the worst parts of having a puppy -- feeding, cleaning up poop, etc. I'm pretty sure mine died on a regular basis because I was too busy skipping it, yak bak-ing (yak-ing bak?), and watching Ghostwriter and Clarissa to ever feed it or take care of it. In 4th grade, these were such a problem in school that the teacher had to allow time for the ENTIRE CLASS to properly care for their electronic pals.
Dunkaroos -- Speaking of school, this was the snack that everyone had to have. I was always jealous of other kids because they got Dunkaroos and my mom always packed me an Oatmeal Cream Pie instead. Anyone know if they still sell these?
Last but not least, Babysitters Club and Boxcar Children -- Anyone remember getting those little Scholastic brochures at school? The ones that you take home and your parents can order you books? Well, my mom finally gave in to all my begging, and got me the subscription to these two series. Each month, I received the next book in the series. Again, the Babysitters and the Boxcar Children were SO GROWN UP, you know, running their own business and living on their own and stuff, that I wanted to be just like them. I'm pretty sure I've read all of the books in both of these series. Oh, and SWEET VALLEY HIGH. Which is turning into a TV show soon. Written by Diablo Cody. And more books are coming out.
Do you remember any of these things? What are you nostalgic for?

lol omg i remember almost all of those things apart from yak bak..
ReplyDeleteI used to love that swingy ankle ball thingymajig!
Great post! I loved Clarissa and the Babysitter's Club too. I always wanted to read the stories about Mary Anne and Logan, and remember feeling sad when he tried to be 'bad' haha I was never allowed Skip-it :(
ReplyDeleteYou're completely right about the 90s having better things for kids than there are today! Most of the stuff today is rubbish, especially TV shows - there's no Kenan and Kel/Saved by the Bell to teach kids how to be cool haha
I remember Dunkaroos! I always thought they were an Aussie only thing.. clearly not :)
ReplyDeleteGHOSTWRITERS AND SKIP ITS!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteOH MY GOSH!
this post just made my day!!
i love old childhood memories!
and dunkaroos! SO YUMMY!
I love this post!! I'd completely forgotten about skip its - I'm not sure I ever had one but I remember loving them. I also had a pair of regular skipping ropes with a counter, they were all plastic and crappy, haha.
ReplyDeleteI was always so jealous of Clarissa and the clear phone - I hate to think how many parents dismayed over that show because their kids wanted their own phone lines and that phone!
Great post.
What a great list!!! It's clear we are so similar in age (I'm a couple years older, I think?) - I fondly remember ALL of these things!!! But my teachers never gave us time to care for our giga pets (and I had the same one you had! GUESS WHAT I STILL HAVE IT!!). I think I was in 6th grade when they were popular. I'm surprised that "Are You Afraid Of The Dark" wasn't on this list! Or Pogs! Pogs were huge for me in 5th or 6th grade.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! So many awesome 90's memories on this list! I had a subscription to the BSC books also! I would read them all so quickly that it would be torture having to wait so long for the next ones.
ReplyDeleteP.S. They totally sell Dunkaroos on amazon.com. I just noticed this a few weeks ago and was so excited! I think they only sell them in Canada or something now.
I'm a new reader and had to say -- we've GOT to be almost exactly the same age, because I feel like I just read a post about my own childhood during the 90's!!! oh my gosh. with the exception of clarissa explains it all (which for some reason I never saw!), I had every. single. one. of these.
ReplyDeleteexcept for the dunkaroos. my mom wouldn't buy them. :(
also, I absolutely loved sweet valley high. and are you saying that they're making a tv show out of it, now?? aaaah that would be so exciting! haha!
Lol I'm only 17 but I totally remember a lot of these things! I had a skip it! And my mom used to buy me the videos to the babysitter club books. And omg I LOVED sweet valley high! I can't wait until it becomes a tv show...took em long enough. Haha but you forgot the judy blume books...so good!
ReplyDeleteOmg, Such a great post! I remember everything! I had a skip it as well as that exact giga pet!
ReplyDeleteKisses,
Stephanie
I found your blog yesterday through Home Ec and this post showed up in my Reader. Now I'm giggling to myself in my office.
ReplyDeleteNow again I want a Skip It (it's good exercise?). I never got one of those rad clear phones, but I did have a clear green Swatch phone (two people could talk on it!). And I'd be lying if I said I didn't watch my Clarissa Explains It All DVD's all the time!
Thanks for sharing!
